The inaugural Arnold Classic Asia brought Hong Kong families and sports enthusiasts together under one roof, to celebrate sport with Arnold Schwarzenegger
(Hong Kong, 9 September 2016) The inaugural Arnold Classic Asia involved over 20,000 participants in festival activities bringing Hong Kong families and sports enthusiasts together under one roof, to celebrate sport with Arnold Schwarzenegger, co-founder of Arnold Classic.
“You like gymnastics,” Schwarzenegger said. “I like bodybuilding. But your exercise is as important as my exercise is. We want to celebrate and bring everyone together.”
“The city saw many firsts during the festival,” said Richard Petty, Chairman of Arnold Classic Asia, a businessman who brought the festival to Hong Kong. “We were very happy to see athletes and the local community come together under one roof. Apart from the first Arnold Classic Asia Multi- Sport Festival, sports lovers also experienced Hong Kong’s first International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Pro Show which showcased professional bodybuilding, strongman world record attempts and women’s pro fitness – a combination of gymnastics, acrobatics, dance and plyometrics with elegance and grace.”
The IFBB Pro Show brought the world’s top athletes from all over the globe to Hong Kong including bodybuilders and strongmen from the U.S, France, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Lithuania. Justin Compton from the U.Swas crowned the first Arnold Classic Asia Pro Bodybuilding champion and the winner of the IFBB Pro Women’s Fitness event was Tanji Johnson, also from the U.S, who has won the Arnold Classic title 10 previously.
VytautasLalas from Lithuania followed the footsteps of protégé and fellow Lithuanian Zydrunas Savickas, “Big Z”, and took home gold in the Strongman finals. “Big Z” was a previous unbeaten champion and holds the record for 4x World’s Strongest Man, 8x Arnold Classic Strongman World Champion and a multiple world record holder for the log lift.
Hong Kong’s strongman gym Ursus had a successful day of amateur competitions with mixed teams of male and female competitors who attempted feats of incredible strength and endurance.
Co-owner of Ursus and an amateur strong- woman Santina Philips said the festival has helped to promote the sport, especially for women, “Almost half of our amateur strongman competitors have been women, proving that the sport isn’t male dominated and women can be just as strong as men. We’ve had really positive response from people who came to watch the competitions and a lot of interest from those who are curious about trying our strongman classes at the gym.”
Hong Kong Jump Rope Open Championship was held at the Festival for the first time this year. The international championship showcased world-class level sport with athletes from 10 countries including USA, China, Singapore and Malaysia. Chairman of the Hong Kong Rope Skipping Federation, York Leung Kin Cheung said “It was great to have the opportunity to hold our Jump Rope Open Championship at Arnold Classic Asia this year. The crowd was very enthusiastic cheering the competitors on – the atmosphere was electric. It was a great chance for us to bring the sport to a wider audience.”
A supporter of Operation Breakthrough Hong Kong, Arnold Classic Asia also believes in the use of sport as a means to help, rehabilitate and positively reinforce young people from disadvantaged backgrounds or families. Operation Breakthrough’s motto is “sport can change lives”, which is exactly what Arnold Classic Asia represents.
“Now, everybody knows Arnold is here and every year Arnold comes back and we do it again,” Petty said.
